THE Federal Government will hold a youth summit to tap into the minds of the next generation of leaders ahead of the Australia 2020 summit in April.
A hundred 15 to 24-year-olds will gather in Canberra on April 12 and 13 to discuss the issues laid down for the Government's Australia 2020 summit with a view to establishing an ongoing Australian youth forum. The Youth 2020 summit will be chaired by Youth Minister Kate Ellis and 2004 Young Australian of the Year Hugh Evans.
They will lead the delegates in discussing issues such as the future directions for the economy, population, sustainability, climate change and water and Australia's future security and prosperity in a rapidly changing world.
Nominations are open to any 15 to 24-year-olds through the Government's Australia 2020 summit website australia2020.gov.au.
Mr Evans said organisers were looking for a wide cross-section of young people to attend the conference.
"We are calling for young people right around Australia – teachers, doctors, nurses, business people, indigenous Australians, volunteers, farmers, students – any young person with good ideas and a stake in the future of our country," Mr Evans said.
Ten of the attendees will be selected to join Mr Evans at the Australia 2020 summit on April 19 and 20.
Ms Ellis said the Government was keen to engage young Australians in determining its 2020 vision.
"This Government is committed to engaging young Australians in the decision-making process and harnessing their vision for the future," Ms Ellis said.
"We're inviting nominations from young Australians around the country to be a part of this summit so we can tap into the wealth of expertise, energy and enthusiasm of young Australians."
