The Australian government will hold a youth summit to tap into the minds of the next generation of leaders ahead of the Australia 2020 summit in April.

A hundred at the age of 15 to 24-year-olds will gather in Canberra on April 12 and 13 to discuss the issues laid down for the government's Australia 2020 summit with a view to establishing an ongoing Australian youth forum.

The Youth 2020 summit will be chaired by Youth Minister Kate Ellis and 2004 Young Australian of the Year Hugh Evans.

They will lead the delegates in discussing issues such as the future directions for the economy, population, sustainability, climate change and water and Australia's future security and prosperity in a rapidly changing world, the Australian Associated Press reported on Monday.

The report said nominations are open to any 15 to 24-year-olds through the government's Australia 2020 summit website australia2020.gov.au.

Ten of the attendees will be selected to join Evans at the Australia 2020 summit on April 19 and 20. At the Australian 2020 summit, 1,000 people will be invited by the prime minister to discuss 10 most challenging topics facing the country.
